Ladies Who Launch: Five Fragrances for International Women’s Day 2021
March 8, 2021 is International Women’s Day and a great occasion to gift your mom, BFF, sister, a coworker or even yourself with a new perfume. Trying to find the perfect fragrance to celebrate can be a daunting task, because there are so many to choose from. Our Editors at Perfume.Com selected five fragrances for International Women’s Day 2021 that are scented tributes to the women entrepreneurs who built their own fragrance brands.
Elizabeth Arden was a power woman and became a mogul during a time when only men ran large businesses. She started her eponymous brand in 1902 as the founder of one of the first American cosmetic companies. She famously opened the Red Door Salon on Fifth Avenue and had a perfume created of the same name. Red Door, composed in 1989, is a lush floral with notes of orchid, jasmine, wild violet, orange blossom, and lily of the valley.
Estee Lauder, whose real name was Josephine Esther Mentzer, was born in Queens, NY. She caused quite a sensation when she launched her first fragrance in 1953 Youth Dew, a spicy oriental fragrance with notes of jasmine, clove, peach and vanilla. In order to get the buyer’s attention at a department store in NYC, she dropped a bottle of Youth Dew Bath Oil on the floor and women shoppers wanted to buy it right then and there. From one scent to a global empire Estee Lauder, the rest is “Her-story.” In 1994, Youth Dew won a Hall of Fame Fragrance Foundation Award.
Paloma Picasso is the Spanish-French daughter of the famed artist Pablo Picasso. Best known for her jewelry for Tiffany and Co, she was the muse for Yves St. Laurent and other fashion designers in the 1970s and launched her own Paloma Picasso perfume line in 1984. Her first perfume Paloma Piccaso is a rich floral chypre with attitude, a mirror to her exotic looks and unique style and flair. Paloma, the perfume, immediately brings to mind the drama of the color scarlet, (she is known for her deep red lipstick) and the color of her packaging. The clove like aroma of dark vermillion carnation is the star supported by red roses and moss. Classy and mysterious, Paloma Picasso EDP is a wonderful fragrance to wear on International Woman’s Day.
Annick Goutal was a former French model that started her own beauty and perfume brand in 1980. She created Annick Goutal Petit Cherie (in French it translates into my little darling) to honor her daughter Camille, who just turned 20 years old. Opening with a ripe peach note, Petit Cherie’s soft florals are enhanced by the scent of roses and freshly cut grass, before drying down to a subtle and smooth vanilla. It is the perfect scented gift of love for your own daughter on International Women’s Day 2021.
Jo Malone began her fragrance journey as a London facialist who first created oils in her kitchen before she debuted her collection of colognes in 1994. They quickly gained a cult following and celebrities from Oprah, Sienna Miller, Kate Middleton and her sister-in-law Megan Markle (the former Duchess of Sussex). We heard that Megan is a fan of Jo Malone Wild Bluebell, a scent that captures the dewy azure hued flowers that grow in woodlands. This soft floral feature lily of the valley, the flower of happiness and is touched with the sweetness of pomegranate. It is a wonderful cologne to wear on International Women’s Day … and every day.
