“I want everyone to wear what they want and mix it in their own way. That, to me, is what is modern.”
― Karl Lagerfeld

One of the most influential designers of the past 50 years is Karl Lagerfeld, recently passed away on February 18, 2019. He was the head designer for Chanel for over 30 years, but also created couture under his own label –Lagerfeld. Before he arrived at Chanel in 1987, Karl Lagerfeld had made his name heading up both Fendi and Chloe. To honor the larger than life fashion designer we pay tribute to five perfumes that were created during his reign as Fashion’s most visionary pioneer.

One of Karl Lagerfeld;s greatest feminine perfumes is Chloe, a floral unlike any other.  This is a scent that is bursting with joie de vivre and youthfulness. Fruity notes of lychee and orange blossom dance around a heady bouquet of jasmine, tuberose, lilac and peony. Think of it as capturing a  breathtaking spring morning.  Yet, there is worldliness and daring. The base is pure sensuality-musk, amber and woody.

Lagerfeld Cologne, originally marketed to men in 1978 is acknowledged as one of the best gender bender scents, and is easily worn by women. Woody cedar intertwines around jasmine, for a rich deep fragrance that is dark with tobacco and light with citrus fruits-lemon and orange.  Contrasting boozy notes with amber and nuances of powder makes Lagerfeld Cologne pure genius and contemporary.

Karl Lagerfeld was an avid photographer.  His fragrance Photo, created in the early 90s it is an aromatic green fougere with spicy lavender and mossy notes that have unexpected touches of light aquatic aromas. Very much ahead of its time, it predated many designer perfumes with its innovative formula.

Perhaps Lagerfeld’s greatest work was for CHANEL, not only in fashion but in perfume. COCO, created in 1984 was one of the first perfumes he directed for the famous House with perfumer Jacques Polge. In an era when women were first moving into executive positions, COCO, with its unique mix of spice and resins, takes florals to the next level. COCO starts with notes of pomegranate blossom, peach and orange blossom, bubbling with aldehydes  as cloves add spice to a regal rose.  Sophisticated and elegant, this oriental perfume is a jewel in the crown of perfumery and like the women Lagerfeld dressed throughout his career defies desciption.
