Fragrance Classifications: Finding Your Perfect Scent

Wearing the same perfume all the time is like sporting the same haircut or eating the same food every day; you need to change it up.

Finding a new signature scent can be tricky. First know your olfactive family. Do you love Floral, Orientals, Woody, or Fresh scents? Each family has a distinct personality… just like you.

If you love floral perfumes chances are you are a woman,  as this is the most popular category in feminine fragrances. Forget smelling like Grandma’s old fashioned talcum powder; choose an elegant bouquet of blooms like Romance by Ralph Lauren. Try Couture Couture by Juicy Couture for a flirtatious fruity floral that  is young and modern and  will make you stand out in a crowd or slink seductively  with a floral scent with a touch of smoky incense like Michael Kors. For men, Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Beau, with orange blossom and lavender is a masculine take on the category.

Oriental fragrances are exotic and mysterious as well as warm and opulent. They can be heavy and strong so opt for updated versions of the classics that are smolder without becoming overbearing. Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior with hints of apricots, rose, jasmine and vanilla and doesn’t overpower but is subtly seductive. Ralph Hot by Ralph Lauren is spicy and lush, with a bit of sweetness from maple sugar.

Fresh scents can be citrus, green or aquatic and are laid back and sporty. They are perfect if you want to smell great without trying too hard and are perfect for the office.  For him try Le Bateleur 1 by Dolce & Gabbana if you want a bit of swagger  or L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Sport which is light and refreshing with a burst of bergamot and earthy patchouli and. For her, Be Delicious by DKNY is cool and crisp with notes of cucumber and green apple.

Woody fragrances are popular family among men as they are often combined with leather and smoky notes. They are also the base notes for many women’s scents known as Chypres which have moss at the base and are musky. Narciso Rodriguez  for Her is one of our favorites with its musky base enhanced by orange blossom, sueded osmanthus and vetiver. We also recommend Donna Karan Cashmere Mist with its cedar and smoky notes blending with a luscious vanilla. Gentleman by Givenchy packs a punch with leather, cedar and oak moss has a bold presence. Dior Homme Intense is one of the best woody scents with its perfect balance of cedar, vetiver and papyrus wood.
